A note from Charlie
I am currently in my final year at Harper Adams University studying a BSc in Agriculture. My career aspiration is to become a farm manager of an arable and beef farm and studying at Harper Adams, as well as gaining knowledge through working in the industry, will hopefully allow me to achieve this goal.
I grew up in Norfolk and have lived there all my life. Although not from a farming family, I have had a passion for the industry ever since I was young, regularly visiting a close family friend’s farm near home. I began working there properly when I was 13, and gained a variety of skills over the years, working with beef cattle, and in arable operations. This is where I established my love for agriculture, and knew I wanted agriculture to be my career path.
I worked on a small beef farm for a year as part of my Level 3 Agriculture course at Easton College and have gained significant experience working on a variety of large arable farms during harvest and through COVID. Following this, I knew I wanted to enrol at Harper Adams University with the goal of achieving a degree in agriculture.
For my placement at Harper Adams, I worked for a mixed farm in East Yorkshire, Rise Farms. There I was involved in every aspect of a typical year on a farm from cultivations through to harvest. I was also heavily involved in spraying as the secondary spray man.
The previous summer I worked as a viner driver for Aylsham pea growers, where I worked the night shift where I operated the machines in the fields as well as getting it down the narrow roads of north Norfolk!
After I finish university, I am planning on travelling to Western Australia to work on a large arable farm out there. This is to gain experience of a completely different type and scale of farming compared to what I’ve experienced in the UK. This is what I will be using some of the scholarship money for, allowing me to get out to Australia.
Once out there, I am planning on spending around six months working for a farm during harvest and the beginning of cultivation. I aim to travel around the Gold Coast of Australia and then head to New Zealand before backpacking around Asia. This is all to become a farm manager of an arable and beef farm back in Norfolk when I return. Gaining as much experience as I can around the world and in the UK will hopefully allow me to achieve my dreams and become a farm manager.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Clan Trust for their generosity in supporting me in my education. This scholarship will directly contribute towards the development of a confident and practically skilled individual who is dedicated to applying the knowledge of sustainable farming practices gained from my studies and through working on different farming systems in the UK and worldwide to the future farming businesses I get the opportunity to work for.
