Clan Trust supports Norfolk Learn about Livestock project

Norfolk charity, the Clan Trust, has donated £6k to the Food, Farming and Discovery Trust (FFDT) this year, in support of their annual Learn about Livestock project. Applications are now open for the next project, which will take place in March 2025.

Now entering its fifth year, Learn about Livestock provides a unique opportunity for primary, secondary, and sixth-form students across Norfolk to fully care for ewes and lambs for one week.

This hands-on experience aligns with one of the Clan Trust’s three pillars, young people in agriculture, which focuses on supporting projects aimed at educating the next generation about farming, food production and the environment.

During the project, students and staff are fully responsible for the livestock’s care and husbandry and are provided with all the necessary equipment and feed, along with 24-hour telephone support and expert veterinary assistance.

Students also have the chance to attend talks by the farmers whose animals they are looking after, and participate in activities centred around wool, natural fibres, and the environmental benefits of grazing. Some schools may even explore the entire field to fork journey!

“It is essential for young people to understand the connections between farming, livestock, and the food they consume, and this hands-on experience facilitates that understanding” FFDT Trust Manager and organiser of the project, Frances Roberson.

"We’re thrilled to support the project and to have committed funding for the next two years. Learn about Livestock offers schools a rewarding opportunity to engage their students in farming and provide valuable insight into its role in society," Clan Trust Chairman, Ben Turner.

Applications are now open and will close on Friday 8th November. Schools interested in taking part can apply on the FFDT website - https://ffdt.co.uk/explore/LAL-2025-Applications](https://ffdt.co.uk/explore/LAL-2025-Applications
